UCB remembers former musical director

Members of Uckfield Concert Brass have paid tribute to their former musical director, David Hughes, who died in Thailand this summer.

David was from Caerphilly and was an accomplished player, arranger and composer. Brass music was in his blood so the band felt it was fitting to play his arrangement of the beautiful Welsh hymn tune Calon Lan at the start of a recent rehearsal. This piece was featured on the CD Versatility, recorded in 2004 under David’s direction.

The band also played Sorry Mr Mozart,  a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of Eine Kline Nachtmusik.  Like all David’s compositions, it is both challenging to play but entertaining for the audience.

The band achieved contest success under David’s baton and performed in many concerts both in UK and abroad.

He was a hard task master who always managed to get 100% from players.

David will be sorely missed by all at UCB and his many banding friends in the South East. The band’s thoughts are with his wife, Nuch.
